Bhaja Govindam

Bhaja Govindam

by Sri Shankaracharya

Adi Shankaracharya is widely known for his teachings on Vedanta. Shankaracharya was born in the village of Kaladi, in South India, about 2500 years ago to his Brahmin parents, Sivaguru and Aryamba. He traveled throughout India during his life, preaching and establishing four important maths, or centers, and accepted numerous disciples. He had also composed a number of verses and hymns of his knowledge and insight. However, the Bhaja Govindam is perhaps his greatest. He is still today one of the greatest influences in the present-day understanding of Vedic philosophy, with numerous schools of thought throughout India still expounding his teachings.

He primarily taught the non-dual, or advaita, form of understanding, teaching that everything is ultimately one. Many of the commentaries on the Vedic texts, such as the Brahma-samhita, the Upanishads, and others, are written with commentaries by those who follow his advaitic principles. Thus, many such texts have the impersonalistic sway to them, leaving out the idea that everything comes from a personal or Supreme Creator. However, before he left this world, he composed the Bhaja Govindam prayers that evokes the mood of devotion to Lord Govinda, Krishna.

It is in this prayer that he emphasizes above all else the importance  for developing devotion for Lord Krishna, which is the principle means for attaining the Grace for the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna, the cause of all causes, and the freedom from cycle of Birth & Death in  this material world. It is this prayer that leaves us no doubt that his final instruction was to give up our egotistical differences and surrender to Lord  Personality of Godhead Sri Krishna. It also encapsulates the sum and substance of all Vedantic thought in whatever other works that he had written.

There is a story attached to the composition of this Hymn. It is said that  Shankara was walking along a street in Varanasi one day, accompanied by his disciples. He heard an old scholar teaching his grammatical rules. Taking pity on him, he went up and advised him not to waste his time on grammar at his age but to turn his mind to Godhead  Govinda ( Other name of Supreme Lord Sri Krishna)in worship and adoration. The Hymn to Govinda was composed on this occasion. Besides the refrain of the song beginning with the words "Bhaja Govindam", Shankara is said to have sung twelve verses, hence the hymn bears the title "Dvadasamanjarika-Stotra" (A hymn which is a bunch of twelve verse-blossoms). The fourteen disciples who were with the Master then are believed to have added one verse each. These fourteen verses are together called "Chaturdasa-manjarika-Stotra" (A hymn which is a bunch of fourteen verse-blossoms).Sri Shankara, the incarnate of Lord Shambhu, the Guru of all Vaishnavas had been instructed by Supreme Lord Sri Krishna that lord Shambhu should appear in the Material World in name of Shankaracharya to exterminate the Buddhism and reestablish the Vedas on the basis of Impersonalism.Lord Shiva followed so.But he ultimately instruct every one to worship only GOVINDA, the Absolute Truth,  with full surrender  prescribed as follows :

It can never be Ignored

It can never be ignored  the intrinsic and inherent relation  of Jivatma  with the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna, the Absolute Truth. The relation is so intimate and deeply rooted with the Lord that until  the Living entity becomes absorbed into the service of Param tatva Sri Krishna through the  mercy of  a bonafide Spiritual master ,he can never realize his  constitutional position and he becomes  deprived from the actual taste of the nectar of Srimad Bhagvatam. Because Srimad Bhagavatam ultimately enunciates the eternal and sweet relation between the  Supreme lord Sri Krishna and  Living entities,  depicting with the transcendental Name, Form, Past time Ecstasies and also about  the his pure devotees. Srimad Bhagavtam exclusively illustrates the perfect track of  Pure Devotion reserved into core of the hearts of  all  living entities.

Krishna Bhakti nitya sidhhya ,  Sadhya Kavu noi

Shravanadi shuddha chitte Koroe Uday

This implies the significance of the eternal Love for the Lord Sri Krishna and the way to manifest from the core of  Heart as it is hidden and not getting emanated  due to  the association with the  matter since time immemorial .Therefore the association of  an exalted devotee  is incumbent, as first priority basis. The flow  of the  Hari Katha delivered by a Pure Devotee of the lord should be eagerly received through the aural reception. The aspirant , who has already comprehended his  materialistic  life filled with demands of the senses and its constant persecution incessantly happening birth after birth due to the cause of IGNORANCE certainly crave for the way out .

Mother Devahuti disclosed her feeling  to Lord Kapila :

Nirbinna Nitaram  bhumann- Asad Indriya  Tarshanat

Yena Sambhavyamanena -Prapanna andham  tamah prabho

Mother Devahuti has addressed  her son Kapila as Prabho , meaning My Lord.

-Mother devahuti says -I am gliding down  to the abysmal region of  the  ignorance  by  indomitable  force of the material senses

Mother has honored  her son as Dear Lord, because Kapila is free from the clutch of Birth and Death and above of all, she understood that  Kapila  was the incarnation of Supreme Lord Sri Krishna. Therefore she asked further about the ultimate emancipation from the  ignorance, which is possible by the  mercy of  Lord.(Lavdham me tad-anugrahat).Unless we get the mercy of the lord everything remain abstruse and incomplete.

Sravanam with complete submission of one self to the service of   bonafide spiritual master,  is the fundamental stage of spiritual journey because hearing  Harikatha  flowed form the holy  lips of the Bonafide Spiritual Master is  emanated as mercy of the lord and it finally can deliver us  the full  intrepidity from the conditional existence of this material life. Thus one starts the journey going back to Godhead. The most beautiful illustration  is Sri Parikshit Maharaj himself, who had concluded as  saying :

             Puran Samhitayam    Asraoussma  Bhavato Vayam

               Yasyam Yat Uttamasloke  Bhagavan Anubarnate.

I have attentively heard  Bhagavat  Puran Samhita from you , which is depicted  with full of  glorifications about Uttamasloka ,Sri Krishna.

Bhagavan  takshkadivya mrityubhya na vibhami aham

pravishta brahma nirvanam  abhayam darshita tvaya

I am no more scared of Death being bitten by the Sarpent called Takshak because I have got the Vision directed by you the   Brahma Nirvanam Abhayam.

Anujanihi Mam Brahman       Vacham yachhami  Adhakshyaje

            Muktakamashayam Chetah    Praveshya visrijami Asun

O, Brahman , now I shall leave this   material body by  engaging  my all senses for the satisfaction of  Lord, Sri Adhakshyaja( who is beyond o fall  sense   perceptions, Sri Krishna himself ). Kindly give me the permission.

This is the real position of  the living entity coming under the complete submission to the  Godhead, Sri Krishna & he becomes completely exonerated.

As far as, jiva,   the  fragmental portion of Lord Sri Krishna(Mamai Vamsa Jiva Loke Jiva Bhuta Sanatanah) is concerned,  jiva can not live separate from all complete and all attractive Lord  Sri Krishna. As,  the Incomplete serves the Complete, inferior serves the superior, finite serves infinite ,so the Jiva souls serves the param tattva , Supreme Lord Sri Krishna.  Jiva souls  must do the service .  It is natural and prime instinct of  Living entities to render the devotional service without any material  motivation & interruption

This is the constittonal position of the Living entities.--- Jiver svarup hai Krishnaer Nitya Das.

Yat Uttamaslok  Gunanuvarnam

Samasta Samsara parisrama  apaharam

Sukadeva Goswamiji says that , being  completely   emerged  in glorifying the Lord Uttamasloka is the only the way to be completely free from all miseries of the material life. Thus the Jiva Souls get back the natural position as eternal servant of the Lord Sri Krishna. Chant Hare Krishna & Be Happy.

Krishna-Supremely attractive

Krishna-it is the name of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.Krishna the name and He  himself is not different. The name and the lord is same. This is the fact.
In material world Water and its name's function is different.Simply by thinking  of water will not Quench the thirst. We have to take water to quench the thirst.Uttering the name of Water will not help to quench. But Krishna the name of the Supreme lord and he himself is one and same. There is no disparity between these two.It is transcendental in highest order.
Krishna the name itself  is meant all attractive. His Name and His activities are beyond of our mental speculation and concoction.Simply by chanting his sweet name of Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare ,Hare Ram Hare Ram Ram Ram Hare Hare  will gradually  drag us from the mire of  inferior pleasure to the superior pleasure.Krishna is the only reservoir of all ecstatic and purest pleasure and Love.
Krishna- the sound is transcendental.Krishna means the highest pleasure. Each of us,every living being, seeks pleasure. But we do not know how to seek pleasure perfectly. With a materialistic concept of life,we are frustrated at every step in satisfying our pleasure because we have no information regarding the real level on which to have real pleasure, one must first understand that he is not the body but Consciousness. Not exactly consciousness, for consciousness is actually the symptom of our real identity:We are pure Soul, now merged within this material body. The moment  we become Krishna Conscious we can experience the eternal joy and bliss. This is the Krishna's beauty in all respect. We should simply chant his name and can gradually uderstand his attractions by his mercy. All the Best.
Hare Krishna.

We are  all eternal servants of God.Our constitutional position is to render the service. We donot have the capability to enjoy the service given by someone. This is naturally situated in our real existence. We try to show off our socalled and bizzare attitude to lord over someone. This is slavery under  the Mind and  the Senses.
We have attained the Human Body. So we should apply our intelligence to go beyond of this bodily demands where we are all confined in a wrong conception -- We Are These Bodies. We are  spirit Soul and we are eternal fragmental part of Supreme Lord Sri Krishna( as per the injunctions of Srimad Bhagavat Gita).Krishna,The Supreme Personality of Godhead is the source of all attactions. He Is beyond of all our mental speculations and concoctions. He is supremely independent. He can entice the god of Sex(Madanamohan). His beuty is unfathomable and incomparable. All of  his qualities are most ecstatic and completely transcendental. His divine name and activities is the  only shelter for them, who are fully exhausted  and have understood the socalled  and pervarted materialstic life.In this iron age which is most complicated and everything is simply fake and full of show off and  full of cheating attitude we should simply Chant with sincerety :-Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare , Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare & Be Happy for ever. All the Best.
